Attar is a concentrated, alcohol-free perfume oil. Traditional attars are distilled from natural materials; many modern attars, including some of ours, are blends of natural and synthetic aroma ingredients.

Dahn al oud is attar made from the essential oil of the Agarwood tree, also called oud or aloeswood. The oil is steam-distilled from the wood and is prized for its strong, musky, woody scent. It’s a cornerstone of traditional perfumery and is typically applied to pulse points for long-lasting fragrance.

1. Agarwood is a rare tree native to Southeast Asia; its fragrant resin only forms in response to infection or damage.
2. Extraction is slow and labour-intensive — steam distillation can take several days per batch.
3. Demand far outstrips supply. Agarwood is difficult to cultivate, and scarcity has been worsened by over-harvesting.
4. It’s treated as a luxury ingredient in high-end fragrance production, which is reflected in the price.

A few factors affect price:

1. Rare or scarce raw ingredients, such as genuine Dahn al Oud, cost more to source.
2. Traditional distillation is slow and labour-intensive compared to synthetic fragrance production.
3. High demand against limited supply can push prices up for certain scents.
4. We prioritise genuine, high-quality natural ingredients, which is reflected in the price of some of our attars.

Not every attar is expensive — we carry a wide range of price points to suit different budgets.

Check for sensitivity before applying attar directly to skin — if you’re prone to reactions from essential oils or perfumes, apply it to clothing instead.

Attar is typically applied to pulse points — wrists, neck, behind the ears — since body heat helps release the fragrance. Dab a small amount using your fingertip, dropper, or spray applicator; attars are highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

Let it dry fully before dressing, since some oils can stain fabric, and avoid applying to skin that will be in direct sun, as some essential oils are photosensitive. To apply to clothing, rub 2-3 drops between your palms first and apply sparingly — darker attars can stain light fabrics.

The bottle’s shelf life depends on the essential oils used and storage conditions. Store attar in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat, in a sealed container, and most attars will keep for several years.

Attar is a concentrated oil-based fragrance with no alcohol in it, while regular perfumes such as eau de parfum or eau de toilette are diluted in an alcohol base. Because attar has no alcohol to evaporate, it tends to sit closer to the skin, develop more gradually over the day, and last considerably longer from a single application.

Orders are dispatched within 2 business days (Monday to Friday). Orders placed on a weekend or a NSW public holiday are processed from the next business day. Delivery with Australia Post then takes 3–6 days for Standard or up to 2 days for Express.

Our attars come in 3 ml, 6 ml, and 12 ml sizes. A 3 ml bottle is a good way to try a new scent without committing, while 12 ml suits a fragrance you already know you love. Attar is highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way — even the smallest size will last months with normal use.

Natural attar is distilled directly from real plant material — oud wood, rose petals, saffron — so its scent tends to shift and deepen the longer you wear it, rather than smelling identical from first application to last. It’s also usually oilier and thicker than synthetic fragrance oil, and the price generally reflects the cost of the raw ingredient.

Any concentrated essential oil can cause irritation in people with sensitive skin, so we’d recommend a small patch test on your inner wrist before wearing a new attar more widely. If you notice any redness or discomfort, stop use — you can always apply the oil to clothing instead of skin.

Return any item within 7 days of delivery for a refund, exchange or store credit. You’re welcome to open the bottle and smell the fragrance, but it must come back full and unused. To try a scent on your skin first, order a 1 ml sample. Return postage is paid by the customer, and the original shipping charge isn’t refunded. Not exactly. Attar reacts with your individual skin chemistry and body heat, so the same oil can smell slightly different from person to person. This is completely normal, and it’s part of what makes attar feel more personal than a mass-produced spray perfume.

Darker attars, particularly oud-based ones, can leave a faint mark on light-coloured fabric, so we’d suggest applying to pulse points on skin rather than directly onto clothes where possible. If you do want to scent clothing, rub a drop or two between your palms first and apply sparingly to a small, hidden area first.
